Backpack Kid 2020

As an occupational therapist, I’ve always been curious about backpack trends among school-age children. These backpacks can be a way for kids to conform with or rebel against the social norms around them by the style they choose, color and use. They may also carry a message about who they are.

A child’s backpack can have a significant impact on their postural alignment and their ability to balance, even at a young age. The literature recommends that a backpack should be no more than 15% of the child’s body weight, which is endorsed by both the American Occupational Therapy Association and the American Physical Therapy Association.

Russell Horning, a teenager nicknamed “backpack kid” because of his signature dance move while appearing on Saturday Night Live during Katy Perry’s performance in 2016, recently filed a lawsuit against Epic Games and Take-Two Interactive for including the floss dance in their wildly popular Fortnite video game. Horning’s lawyer argues that he has been making money from the dance since 2016 and should therefore be compensated for the inclusion in the game.

With schools closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many families are struggling to provide food for their children. One local organization is doing its part to help families in Lewiston and the surrounding area through its Blessings in a Backpack program. The program provides weekend meals for students who qualify based on their school attendance. For more information about how you can help during this difficult time, click here.
