Backpack Zipper Locks

If you don’t want to spend a fortune on a new backpack with built-in theft-proof zippers, or your favorite bag doesn’t have them, you can take other steps to prevent theft. The best way to do this is by making it harder for a thief to gain entry to your pack. If it takes too long to get into your bag, he or she will probably move on to a more tempting target. This can be as simple as using a zip tie to secure the zippers or padlocking them. It’s also possible to retrofit most backpacks with lockable zipper sliders that are sold at luggage repair specialty shops and hardware stores (or homemade).

Unlike the sliders that have locks built in them, these usually don’t force a tooth into the zipper. But they do make it difficult to use a paperclip or paper tie to pick the zipper. They also work great for keeping stray hands from reaching into camera bags, laptop bags, daypacks and other gear.

Another option is the TravelMore Ultra-Secure Mini Key Padlock. This is a bit more expensive, but it’s more versatile than a standard zip lock. It separates into a body and a cable-like straight bar that slots into the zippers of backpacks, duffel bags, purse latches or computer bags. It’s even TSA-approved, so you can use it on your flights without risking the dreaded red pen mark.

If you’re traveling abroad, consider picking up a few of these TSA-approved locks from your local drug store or airport shop. This is a good idea in case your luggage gets searched by security, but even if it doesn’t, these locks are tough enough to resist being cut with a pair of wire cutters.
