A backpack cat carrier allows you to safely take your feline companion on any adventure you can think of, from a quick walk in the park to a trip abroad. A good quality one should be spacious, allowing your kitty to move around comfortably and stand up without feeling squished. It should also be sturdy enough to support your cat’s weight without shifting or collapsing. Check the product descriptions for the rated weight limit and dimensions to make sure it will be large enough for your pet.
Look for well-ventilated backpacks that have either mesh windows or holes that allow adequate air flow, especially if you choose one with a bubble window. Avoid the spaceship-style backpacks, which look cool but may not offer your kitty sufficient ventilation or room, causing her to feel overheated and claustrophobic.
Introduce your cat to the bag gradually and give her lots of opportunities to explore it on her own so she gets comfortable with it. Start by letting her inside for short periods of time.
Once your cat is comfortable entering the bag, use a clicker and some treats to train her to get into it on cue. Gradually increase the amount of time you keep her zipped or closed and then work up to putting it on your back for walks.
While walking with your cat in a backpack does make it safe for her to be above ground-level threats (such as other pets, cars and people), you should always supervise your pet at all times. A cat in a backpack can still be injured or killed by something you don’t see coming, so never leave your kitty unattended in the backpack.
