Choosing a Backpack For Photography

Choosing the right backpack can make a big difference in how you carry your gear. Having the right backpack can also help you avoid unnecessary discomfort and stress on your shoulders and back.

A good backpack should have wide padded straps to distribute weight evenly across the shoulders and chest, and it should be well padded on the back for comfort, as well. The AAP advises against narrow straps that dig into the shoulders. It’s also recommended that the pack should be large enough for a student to put all of their belongings inside, and that it should fit snugly on their backs.

Depending on the type of photography you’ll be doing, your backpack may be dedicated to camera gear (fully padded and with a fully customizable section) or it may be smaller and include space for both photo gear and personal items. If your backpack is designed for camera gear, it’s likely to have extra pockets for accessories, and it will often include a tripod holder on the front or side of the bag.

A good camera backpack will also have a pocket for a hydration bladder, and many come with a rain cover. If you plan to carry a camera, it’s a good idea to find a backpack with a compartment for an AV cable that will allow you to connect your camera to your tv or video monitor. A separate pouch for memory cards and batteries is a nice addition too, and a grab handle on the top of the bag can be helpful when you’re carrying it up steep trails or stairs.
