How to Attach Backpack Patches

The backpack is a classic piece of clothing that can be easily customized with patches to express individuality and personality. The best backpack patches are designed with a durable fabric to withstand frequent use and rough treatment. Backpack patches should be sewn or glued to the backpack to prevent them from loosening over time.

When hand sewing your patch to the bag, you should choose thread that matches the color of the patch for minimal visibility. You should also double-knot the thread end to secure it. When you’re ready to sew, start from the inside of the bag a few millimeters away from the patch and insert the needle into the fabric and patch. Pull the thread through and then stitch around the edges of the patch in a straight line. If you’re feeling fancy, you can opt for an overcast stitch (also known as a zigzag stitch).

Another great option for attaching backpack patches is using velcro. This type of adhesive offers versatility and convenience since it can be positioned and repositioned on the backpack as needed. These types of patches are especially popular among outdoor enthusiasts, military personnel and students who may need to swap out backpacks frequently.

If you’re using a fabric glue, select a low-temperature adhesive specifically formulated for nylon and synthetic fabrics to prevent the material from melting or warping. Ensure the glue is well-mixed before application and spread it directly onto the backpack within the pencil outlines, ensuring it covers the entire area but does not overlap the edges to prevent spillage. Position the patch over the glue and press firmly to ensure a strong bond. Allow to dry completely before handling.
