Jordan, a young but ancient state, occupies an area that has played a prominent role in many of the world’s great civilizations. The ancient kingdoms of Moab, Gilead and Edom lie within its borders, along with the famed red stone city of Petra. It is bounded to the north by Syria, to the east by Iraq and Saudi Arabia, to the south by Israel and the West Bank (so named because it was under Jordanian rule from 1948 to 1988).
The majority of the country is covered by the Syrian Desert, with outcrops of sandstone in the southern part. The uplands to the east of the Jordan River are mainly composed of limestone, chalk and flint, rising to a high point at Mount Ramm in the extreme south.
As with many countries in the Middle East, it is worth bearing in mind that the currency in Jordan is the Jordanian Dinar and not the Euro – so bring your own JD cash or make sure you’ve got a decent exchange rate before you go! You’ll also need to pack a European adapter as Jordan uses standard European pin plugs.
