Backpacking and Hiking – Are They the Same Thing?

Backpacking is a type of travel, often involving travel within the country and staying at inexpensive lodgings. It has become a mainstream type of tourism, after being perceived as a marginal form of travel done only due to necessity. It was also portrayed as an alternative to hiking and camping, for people who preferred to travel in more measured and systematic ways. In the past, backpacking was associated with backpackers, hikers and trekkers, and was generally seen as a rough, dangerous and even backbreaking travel. However, recent times have seen a change in the general perception of backpacking. Today, backpacking has become a popular means of travel for people who like the outdoors, love to explore new places and do not wish to be limited by conventional modes of travel.

A typical backpacking experience would involve hiking and camping in a location that is off the beaten track, far from the tourist trap or from developed tourist zones. The backpacker will need to carry all the necessary belongings in a pack on his back, and will most likely stay in a tent or some other temporary shelter provided by the host country or host community. In most cases, backpacking trips are self-supported, meaning that the backpacker carries all his own provisions and equipment, without the help or support of other people.

Backpackers can choose to travel by foot, by hiking or by cycling. Hiking is the more popular hiking path due to its simplicity, relative ease and the ability to travel relatively long distances while accompanied by companionship. Hiking can take several forms, such as hiking through a national park, through a city or town, or along a river, mountain trail or other long and winding hiking path.

There are a number of different types of backpacking trips, including day hiking, overnight hiking trips, camping, trekking and backpacking. Day trips generally involve a shorter distance and more rest days. They tend to be much less expensive than overnight backpacking trips. Overnight backpacking trips are usually the lengthiest of all backpacking trips and involve an extended period of travel time and camping time, often between two and four weeks. Day hikes and overnight backpacking are the two most popular varieties of backpacking trips.

Hiking and backpacking are often used interchangeably, especially by younger people who are unfamiliar with hiking but also unfamiliar with backpacking. For example, the young trekker may enjoy hiking, because he feels adventurous and brave, while the backpacker may enjoy backpacking because he feels like he has a certain ‘cool’ status amongst his peers. However, the two activities share some things in common. Both require stamina, for hiking; as well as, good navigational skills and good fitness. Additionally, both require and encourage socializing and interaction with other human beings.

Before going on a backpacking trip, you need to pack your backpack, or have it packed for you, before leaving home. You can either pack it at home or take it with you when you travel. Pack the backpack once you arrive at your destination, or after you have unpacked at a rest station. When packing the backpack, make sure that everything fits comfortably inside of it. It is recommended that you pack a pair of hiking shoes, a sleeping bag and other equipment necessary for hiking, unless you are traveling light. If you have purchased a hiking package deal from a tour operator, then all you need to do is read the fine print so you know what is not included in the package.
